What is Otago and What to Expect on Your First Visit?
Maintaining strength, balance and confidence in movement is essential to living well and independently as we get older. Our Otago Strength and Balance classes are designed to support this in a safe, structured and supportive way. The Otago Exercise Programme is an evidence-based approach, widely used within health and community settings to reduce the risk of falls and improve overall physical function. It focuses on a series of gentle, progressive exercises that target lower limb strength, balance, coordination and mobility. Over time, these exercises can help to improve stability, increase confidence when moving, and support people to carry out everyday activities more safely.
For many of the people we support, these classes are about more than physical health alone. They can help rebuild confidence, reduce fear of falling, and support people to remain independent in their own homes and communities.
We understand that attending a new class, particularly one focused on physical activity, can feel daunting. Many people arrive unsure of what to expect or whether it will be suitable for them. Our sessions are designed to feel welcoming and accessible from the outset. Each class is delivered by a qualified Otago instructor and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers. While the exercises themselves follow a structured programme, participants are encouraged to work at their own pace, take breaks when needed, and build confidence gradually over time. Our volunteers are there to offer reassurance and support throughout the session for anyone who would like or needs a little extra help.
When you arrive for your first class, you will be welcomed by the team and given time to settle in and feel comfortable in the space. The exercises are gentle and guided, often beginning with chair-based or supported movements, with a focus on building strength and balance in a safe and manageable way. There is no expectation to have prior experience or a certain level of fitness. Beyond the exercises, there is also a strong social element to the classes. After each session, we provide tea, coffee and biscuits, and everyone is encouraged to stay for a chat. For many, this time is just as valuable as the class itself, offering an opportunity to connect with others and feel part of a supportive community. Our Prevention Team delivers a number of Otago classes throughout the week across Renfrewshire, making it easier for people to access support locally.
If you feel that you, or someone you support, could benefit from improving strength and balance, we encourage you to submit a referral through the “Get Involved” section of our website. Our team will be happy to guide you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have.
